American Encaustic Tile Company (AETCO) plate. Made during the Frederick Hurten Rhead period with a cornucopia central design and a decorative border. There is a hand decorated sunburst on the reverse. Marked AETCO and 1927. Diameter 8 3/8 inches. Excellent condition.   Price: $160

The American Encaustic Tiling Company (AETCO) was founded in New York City in 1875. The company’s glazed tiles were made to compete with English tiles sold in the United States for use in fireplaces and other architectural features. By 1890 AETCO was the largest tile company in the world. A factory was established at Zanesville, Ohio in 1892. The firm closed in 1935.
