Jerk Werkmäster (1896-1978) was born in Rättvik, Sweden. He graduated from Mora Folk High School in 1915. From there Werkmäster continued his studies at the Higher School of Art and Design in Stockholm (1916–19) and at Konstakademien, the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, (1919–22). Werkmäster was a multi-talented artist and was active in painting and woodcutting as well as ceramics. He designed for the Böhlmark’s lamp factory. For more than thirty years (1933 – 1967) Werkmäster was the artistic director at Nittsjö ceramics factory in Rättvik, Sweden.
