Jose Pinal Nude Wood Carving

Jose Pinal (1913 – 1983) Mid-century nude modern style wood carving. The figure is approximately 9.5 inches wide by 4.25 inches deep and  5.0 inches tall. Base 10.2 inches by 5.0 inches by 1.5 inches. Signed on base J. Pinal. It is in very good condition with no significant chips, cracks or losses. There are a few minor areas of wear to the figure and a few nicks to the base.  Price: $230

Jose Pinal (1913 -- 1983) was a visual artist who was born in 1913 in Guadalajara, Mexico. At the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco, Pinal then 26 years old, was commissioned to demonstrate his art at the Mexican Pavilion. Pinal returned to his native Mexico and established a wood carving workshop in Mexico City where he and his apprentices created original religious, contemporary, and abstract figures.

Franz Hirsch Art Deco Copper Bowl (Germany)

Art Deco low copper bowl with a Parrot design by Professor Franz Hirsch, Munich, Germany. Marked on the reverse “GERMANY, Franz Hirsch, München.” Approximately 9.2 inches diameter by 1.2 inches tall.  Price: $280

Professor Fritz Hirsch (1871 – 1938) was a German art historian, architect, and pioneer of state-sponsored historical preservation. He was born on 21 April 1871 in Konstanz, in the German Empire, to parents of Jewish descent.

Hirsch graduated from a Konstanz gymnasium in 1889 and then began studying art and architecture in Karlsruhe and Munich. From 1895, Hirsch worked as an apprentice architect at the inspection offices of the Konstanz and Heidelberg districts. He received his doctorate in 1897.

In 1900 Hirsch became an assessor specializing in architecture for the government of Heidelberg. Five years later he was the district inspector for Bruchsal.  From 1900 to 1909 Hirsch directed a restoration of Schloss Bruchsal and the nearby St. Peter's Church, a ground­breaking landmark in the field of historical preservation. Hirsch was dismissed from all his positions in 1933 by the anti-Semitic Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service

American Encaustic Tile Company (AETCO) Plate

American Encaustic Tile Company (AETCO) plate. Made during the Frederick Hurten Rhead period with a cornucopia central design and a decorative border. There is a hand decorated sunburst on the reverse. Marked AETCO and 1927. Diameter 8 3/8 inches. Excellent condition.   Price: SOLD

The American Encaustic Tiling Company (AETCO) was founded in New York City in 1875. The company’s glazed tiles were made to compete with English tiles sold in the United States for use in fireplaces and other architectural features. By 1890 AETCO was the largest tile company in the world. A factory was established at Zanesville, Ohio in 1892. The firm closed in 1935.

William Robert Thrasher (1908 – 1997) Winter Scene

Born in Lamar County, Texas, in 1908, William Robert Thrasher was a farm boy. Because of his desire to paint, he spent all his earnings on brushes and canvas. He observed and painted the life he knew including wildlife, farm scenes, and the unspoiled countryside of the early twentieth century. His early works were rendered on beaver board, Masonite, and other materials available to the young artist. Approximate size including frame: 10 3/8 inches by 12 1/4 inches by 1 inch.   Price:  $325

Fulagawa Porcelain Company Tree Squirrel Vase

In 1894 the modern Fukagawa company (Fukagawa Porcelain Company) was founded by Fukagawa Chuji (1871-1934) in the Arita region of Japan. The company exported a  highly prized porcelain ware to Europe and America. The Fukagawa mark is the name of the company below Mt. Fuji.

In the Paris International Exposition in 1900 Chuji Fukagawa won the medaille d'or with a large Flower Vase. The Fukagawa company has served as purveyor for the Japanese Imperial Household since 1910 and only produces white high temperature porcelain.

Peale Museum Silhouettes (pair)

Early 19th century Peale Museum silhouettes of a gentleman and a lady. Impressed “Museum” stamp on the lady and a pencil signed family name at the bottom edge on the gentleman.  Approximately 4 3/4-inches by-3 1/2 inches. Price: $380 (pair)

Prior to the spread of the silhouette, only the very wealthy could enjoy the luxury of portraiture. That changed in 1802, when John Isaac Hawkins patented a version of a physionotrace that reproduced silhouette tracings in miniature on small pieces of paper.

Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) installed a Hawkins physionotrace in his Philadelphia Museum as an early kind of visitor interactive where the machine-aided, hand-finished souvenir silhouettes became a public sensation.
